UEFA Champions League, KO: 20:00 Aug 27, 2024, Epet Arena
Our prediction for this Champions League match:
After dropping two points in a 2-2 draw with Slovacko, Sparta Prague will look to return to winning ways when they take on Malmo in the Champions League playoffs, return leg. Sparta Prague won the first leg 2-0, meaning that they are with one foot in the group stages. However, the Swedish champions should not be written off just yet. Serbia winger Veljko Birmancevic should be recalled to the starting XI after scoring as a substitute in the last league match, while the likes of Imanol Garcia and David Pavelka should miss out with injuries.
Malmo, on the other hand, will have a mountain to climb in Prague as Sparta are a real force to be reckoned with at home. As Henrik Rydstrom’s men experienced all sorts of problems at the back in a 2-2 draw with Kalmar at the weekend, home win should be considered. The likes of Lewicki, Moisander, Tinnerholm, and Holmquist Vecchia are injured for the visiting team.
How the bookies view it: Upper hand for Sparta
Sparta Prague have the upper hand among the bookies and are priced at 9/10 by Win99. A victory for Malmo is valued at 5/2 by Win99, who is also offering odds of 11/4 for a draw.
Head to head: Sparta with the edge
Sparta Prague have a 3-2 advantage from five previous matches against Malmo. The Czech side have already beaten their rivals twice this year, claiming a 2-1 victory in a friendly back in February before last week’s 2-0 win.
Players to watch: Eyes on Olatunji
Victor Olatunji has caught the eye for Sparta Prague this season, scoring three goals across all competitions. The Nigerian forward could be joined in attack by Veljko Brmancevic and Lukas Haraslin. And all three men could 3nsure the Czechs produce over 1.5 goals at 4/5 with Wjpeso.
Isaac Kiese Thelin and Erik Botheim have a solid attacking partnership for Malmo and will be tasked with orbiting the spark on Tuesday. Both men can combine to ensure the visitors produce over 0.5 goals at 4/11 with 188jili.
Probable line-ups
Olatunji and Haraslin were second half substitutes for Sparta Prague at the weekend and should return to the starting line-up. Filip Panak is also expected to retain his place in the heart of the defence.
Kiese Thelin and Botheim are expected to continue in attack, with Hugo Bolin providing support. Sergio Pena should start in midfield while Pontus Jansson is set to retain his place in defence.
Sparta Prague: Vindahl, Vitik, Panak, Sorensen, Preciado, Kairinen, Laci, Rynes, Haraslin, Brmancevic, Olatunji
Malmo: Dahlin, Stryger Larsson, Jansson, Zetterstrom, Busanello, Nanasi, Berg Johnsen, Pena, Bolin, Botheim, Kiese Thelin
Sparta Prague vs Malmo Prediction
Sparta Prague is in the driving seat when they welcome Malmo for the second leg of the Champions League play-off. Thanks to a late strike from Matej Rynes that earned them a 2-0 win after Jens Stryger Larson’s own goal put them ahead in the first half.
Liverpool is the only team that managed to bag a win at the epet ARENA in Prague since the start of last season and Malmo are yet to win an away fixture in Champions League since 2021.
It is a fair assessment that Malmo has a mountain to climb in Prague. And since we are encouraged by Sparta’s home record over a prolonged period of time. The home win is the best bet for this Champions League fixture.
Both teams have been excellent in front of goal this season. And despite expecting a tight defensive display from Sparta, we are backing over 2.5 goals in this match.
